Le détective Philip Marlowe, qui réside en Angleterre, est convoqué, un beau jour, chez le richissime général Sternwood, lequel entend bien mettre un terme au chantage dont sa fille cadette, Camilla, est la victime. Marlowe accepte l'affaire et commence son enquête chez un curieux libraire, Geiger, qu'on retrouve un peu plus tard assassiné. A cette occasion, le détective comprend que Camilla est nymphomane et que sa sœur aînée, Charlotte, dont le mari, Rusty, a mystérieusement disparu depuis quelques temps, vit en relation étroite avec le propriétaire d'un cercle de jeux florissant, Eddie Mars.
