Au XVIème siècle, en Espagne, Nicholas Medina épouse la britannique Elisabeth Barnard. Nicholas est le fils d'un redoutable bourreau qui a sévi au service de l'inquisition : les caves lugubres de son château familial sont donc encore pleines de vieux instruments de tortures qu'Elisabeth se complaît sinistrement à observer.

Mais, un jour, on la retrouve morte de peur. Des mois plus tard, son frère Francis Barnard arrive de Grande-Bretagne pour mener son enquête. Il se montre très suspicieux envers Nicholas, tandis que des évènements étranges semblent indiquer que le château serait hanté par l'âme de sa soeur. Nicholas finit par avouer qu'il craint qu'on ait enterré sa femme alors qu'elle était encore vivante, dans un état cataleptique...
