Un jeune docteur, Bartholomew Snow, est convoqué chez le général Pratt, chef de la sécurité du territoire, qui lui demande de soigner un malade, Vincenti, un important physicien. Snow accepte d'être conduit, les yeux bandés, à la base «X» où travaille Vincenti.

Au cours du voyage, Pratt lui explique que des espions ennemis veulent à tout prix enlever Vincenti. Le lendemain, au cours de sa promenade à cheval dans Central Park, une jeune fille, Vicky, se jette sous sa monture. Snow l'emmène chez lui pour la soigner. Elle en profite pour dérober le dossier Vincenti.
