Dans l'Ouest américain, au printemps 1871, un ambassadeur japonais, entouré de deux gardes samouraïs, se rend en train à Washington, à bord d'un wagon privé, pour remettre un sabre de grande valeur au Président des Etats-Unis, cadeau de l'Empereur du Japon. A bord de ce même train, se trouve le hors-la-loi Link, son second Gortch et sa bande de pillards.

Ils attaquent le fourgon postal et volent l'or. Mais Gortch s'empare aussi du sabre, après avoir tué l'un des samouraïs. De plus, Gortch, voulant garder l'or pour lui, fait tuer Link par ses complices et s'enfuit. Kuroda recueille Link, blessé, et le soigne. Les deux hommes décident de retrouver la bande
